The term "Istana" denotes a palace in both Malay and Indonesian, serving as the distinguished appellation for the official residence and office of the President of Singapore. Nestled at the base of Mount Sophia in central Singapore, The Istana stands as a celebrated architectural marvel within the local community. Drawing inspiration from 18th-century neo-Palladian style structures crafted by British military engineers in India, The Istana exhibits a tropical design reminiscent of a Malay house. Adorned with stately columns, expansive verandahs, louvered windows, and paneled doors strategically positioned for optimal cross-ventilation, the building emanates a timeless elegance.
The commanding focal point is the central three-storey tower, soaring to a height of 28 meters. Flanking it are well-proportioned two-storey side wings, adorned with Ionic, Doric, and Corinthian orders. Notably, Ionic colonnades grace the second storey, while Doric colonnades embellish the first storey. Positioned atop an elevated site, The Istana surveys its expansive grounds, known as the Domain, evoking the grandeur of England's majestic gardens.
